Lesson 5 Differences from the Traditional Classroom

Objective Describe the differences between a traditional classroom and an online classroom

Classroom

Online classrooms take many shapes and forms. Classes differ in the way the subject is presented, the types of communication used, and the degree of structure. In general though, the learner connects to the learning site on the Internet where they have access to the course materials and make contact with the instructor and other learners who are taking the course. Learners navigate through the course materials, which present a series of links to a web of related materials. The course materials may take the form of text pages, audio, or video links. Communication between the learner and the instructor and between learners is conducted by email, an online bulletin board, messaging program, or in a chat room. Assignments can be submitted by email or posted on a web page.

Other models have blended the online learning with face to face meetings. Research suggests this practice allows students to retain information much longer as the face to face portion re-inforces what they learn online. Moreover, individual reflections online give the teacher the medium to plan for changes for the next lesson if the objective of the lesson is not met. It is a win-win situation making for better learning and better instructional practice.

Technology The technology used in online courses varies greatly. Currently most courses place a heavy emphasis on text and graphics for presentation primarily because they are the most reliable. Although audio and video capabilities exist, they currently do not meet the expectations of learners who are used to radio, television, and telephone. In addition, these technologies may require hardware, software or high-speed Internet connections that are beyond those of the average Internet user.

  Pedagogy

When you sign up for a traditional classroom course, you expect to have an experience based on the institution, subject and teacher you have chosen. You wouldn't expect every teacher to teach in the same place, the same way, present the same information, and require the same assignments. Buildings and their facilities differ. Teachers have different personalities and present information in different formats. Some will lecture while others will use the blackboard, an overhead projector, films, audiotapes, or discussion. You may be expected to take an exam, do a presentation, or complete a project.
