Lesson 3 Critical Thinking

Objective Discuss the Importance of Critical Thinking Skills

In a truly collaborative setting where dialogue and feedback is the norm, education is shifted from a teacher centered, lecture based, passive instruction to a learner centered, self-reflective, and active learning (Lan, 1999).

Critical thinking skills are necessary in this type of learning environment. It is not just about giving answers, but asking questions as well. As Gene Kowch (2002) suggests in his activity suggestions page, "After you've responded initially to the discussion thread's tantalizing teaching question, toss in threads or questions that might make us really think about DL. Challenge us to think. Let's explore the material and new ideas together."

In the team discussion, you will find a discussion thread that poses the question - "Does the colloborative nature of distance learning lead to deeper knowledge and understanding?" There is no right or wrong answer to this question, the question is meant to be thought provoking. Post your thoughts to this question by responding to the discussion thread.
