Lesson 5 Citing References

Objective Cite references using APA style

Copyright

Now that you are an academic, all work borrowed for research purposes must be cited. Some universities prefer APA style of referencing while community colleges stick to the MLA style of referencing. No matter what though, all information that is not yours must be cited and referenced. If you are referencing more than 3 sentences, make sure to block quote it.

You must also keep in mind that any use of a 'substantial portion' of another author's work requires copyright clearance. Printed material is often covered by the AccessCopy (formerly CanCopy) agreement. However, all digital media must be cleared directly with the copyright holder. In a digital environment, copyright clearance can sometimes be difficult to obtain - and you should allow yourself plenty of time to track down the copyright holder in order to obtain permissions.
